Teaching

This page collects my past teaching activities: courses, lectures and the supervision of student theses. I taught at Heilbronn University from 2014 until October 2026 and am no longer taking on new courses or theses there. I do continue to teach through talks, training and workshops; see the Services page.

Courses

I taught regularly in both summer and winter semesters, contributing to the bachelor and master programmes in Medical Informatics, Applied Computer Science and Software Engineering. Over this period my courses spanned the full path from the foundations of practical computer science to advanced, project-based software engineering, in two distinct roles.

Courses I ran in my own responsibility centred on programming and software engineering. I led Höhere Programmiertechniken (Advanced Programming Techniques) and Softwarelabor 2, and, latterly, the master-level AI-Assisted Software Quality Management in Agile Software Projects. The latter reflected my research interests and looked at how AI tooling is changing the way teams build and assure software; it is the basis for the talks and training on AI-assisted software engineering listed on the Services page.

I created that course in the early LLM era, well before coding agents became commonplace, when AI support in practice meant prompting a chat window and pasting the result back into an editor. Running it over the following semesters made the shift unusually easy to observe: within only two years the same material had to account for agents that read a repository, run the tests and open pull requests, which moves the quality question away from "is this snippet correct" and towards review, test design and knowing what to verify when the volume of generated code is no longer the bottleneck.

In a larger number of further courses I acted as a teaching assistant, taking on primarily the technical supervision of the software-development assignments. These included the software labs and practicals (Softwarelabor 1, Softwarepraktikum 1 to 3) and Grundlagen der Praktischen Informatik, the database practicals (Praktikum Datenbanken 2, Datenbanken im Gesundheitswesen), the Praktikum Verteilte Systeme on distributed systems, and a Wissensmanagement (knowledge management) course taught as a substitute.

Theses

Over the years I supervised a range of bachelor and master theses in my research and subject areas, from focused web crawling and web data mining to distributed systems and software engineering practice.
